6. How do I care & clean exotic leathers?

CROCODILE LEATHER

Congratulations!  You’ve just possessed one of the most sought after exotic skins product.  Crocodile bags are generally considered to be the king of handbag world.  It is not only a stylish accessory to boast your personal taste, but also a collectible treasure to invest in that can be passed down through generations.  Restoring your crocodile skin product involves learning how to correctly clean, moisturize and store the investment to ensure it rocks your outfit for many years to come.  Here are what we recommend to take care of your leather accessories:

To Care:

1.  After you buy a new crocodile leather product, apply a small amount of premium exotic leather conditioner.  Do this twice a year to preserve the leather and to help provide water resistance.

2.  If your handbag gets wet, allow it to air-dry naturally.  Keep it away from any source of heat.  When the leather is almost dry, apply a bit of leather conditioner to restore flexibility.

3.  Don’t use any animal fat on your leather, animal oil will darken your leather; and, it will make the leather smell bad and decay gradually.  Do not use leather conditioners that contain waxes or silicone which do not allow the leather to breathe.  NEVER apply conditioner directly to the leather, apply it to the cloth first.

4.  Your leather bag should be stored empty, and stuffed with tissue paper in order to maintain its shape.

5.  Don’t apply any household furniture polish, alcohol, or other solvents to your leather bag.

6.  Do not store your handbag in a closed plastic bag.  Remember that leather breathes and that is why it is soft and flexible.

7.  Store the crocodile handbag in a cool, dry spot that is away from direct heat.  Heat removes moisture from the crocodile leather, causing a loss of natural shine.

To Clean:

1.  Wipe down the handbag’s surface with a damp microfiber cloth.  This is sufficient to clean the crocodile skin, unless there is a difficult stain.

2.  Remove any stains from the crocodile handbag by dampening a household sponge with exotic-leather cleaner.  Work the cleaner into the affected area using overlapping circles.

3.  Wipe away any remaining cleaner with a damp cloth and allow the product to dry completely.

4.  Apply a light coating of leather conditioner to the crocodile handbag with a soft cloth.  Choose a lanolin-free product or one that is formulated for use on exotic skins.

STINGRAY LEATHER

Stingray leather is very strong leather.  It is much stronger than cow leather because of the way the leather itself is structured. With cow and other types of leather, the fibers of the leather tend to run in a parallel direction to each other, while in stingray leather, the fibers are random and most often crises crossing each other, forming a much tighter bond between the fibers. While some leather is easily torn, stingray leather is not, due to the cross hatch arrangement of the fibers within the leather.  Additionally, stingray leather has those famous little bumps that are actually calcium scales that were a protection against some predators for the stingray.  Once the leather is tanned, these bumps are rock hard and add additional strength to the leather but also add a guard against scratching, cutting and increased anti-tear strength.

While this leather is of exceptional strength, it still needs proper care to make its beauty last as long as the leather itself.

Here are some tips to take care of your stingray leather item that will help extend the life and beauty of your stingray product.

To Clean:

Removing Dirt – Removing dirt from stingray leather item can many times be done by simply wiping the leather with a slightly (barely) dampened cloth.  In tough spots you can use a very mild soap with water and gently clean the surface area.  Do not rub too hard as most stingray skins are both dyed and surface painted to get that beautiful color.  Scrubbing too hard may remove some of the surface color of your stingray leather and result in an unsightly showing of the greyish scales underneath.

To Care:

Storage of Stingray products – Never keep leather products in contact with other leather products when storing them.  The finishing on each product may cause them to stick together.  Do not wrap leather products in plastic bags as this causes drying out of leather products.  To store your stingray leather items (or any leather items for that matter) it is always best to store them wrapped in paper.  Tissue paper works best for this type of product.  You could also use our cloth bag that we provide with each of our products as a storage container in lieu of paper.  Keep your stingray products stored away from heat and moisture.  Never leave any leather products exposed to direct heat or sunlight as this quickly dries out the natural oils from leathers.

Drying your stingray product – If for any reason your stingray product gets wet, (rain soaked, dropped in water, etc.) do not add heat to it to speed up the drying process.  Place the item on a dry surface, preferably on a piece of tissue paper and let it dry at room temperature naturally.

You can use a water repellant made for exotic skins.  It is usually in spray form and should not contain any silicone.

Customers have recommended and rated very highly a leather conditioner by the Bickmore company called Bick 4 leather conditioner for use on most leathers including exotics.  It does not darken finished leather products, and is great for exotic leathers.  In addition to using to condition and maintain the appearance of your leather items, the company also recommends using the Bickmore Leather Repellant spray to help make your leather item more water repellant.  You can read more about the Bickmore line of quality leather care products here

 ALLIGATOR LEATHER

To Care:

Alligator skin is an extremely durable, long-lasting skin. Even though in the fashion world it is part of what we call an "exotic skin", this does not mean it is delicate to the degree that one must exercise extreme caution when handling. Still, it is important to keep in mind that in order to maintain the characteristics of the original skin itself, any item of clothing or accessory made in alligator (or any other exotic skin), will need to be conditioned every so often.

To Clean:

For the most part, the use of a good conditioner will suffice, since these are created to also clean the item if lightly soiled. For heavily soiled skins, a mild cleaner will be necessary, but always test the cleaner by applying to a hidden area. We recommend products which do not contain silicone because this substance may discolor the tanned skin; so the more natural the product, the better the result. Also, refrain from using any product that may contain mink oil, since this substance has the potential to destroy the stitching on the item.

To Store:

Another important aspect to consider is the climate where the item is worn or used and stored. In climates that are dry, conditioning needs to be done every two weeks at least. In climates that are humid, conditioning can be done every couple of months; but in such climates it is imperative to stay alert for the possibility of "mold" attacking the skin.

Finally, for climates that vary in temperature (very hot summers and very cold winters), it is best to store items made of exotic skins in temperature controlled rooms (not too hot and not too cold). Always store your items in their respective protective bags (luxury brands always provide these with their product), and condition them often if the skin begins to feel a bit hard to the touch.

On a final note, avoid direct sunlight (over prolonged periods of time), and exposure to water. If your handbag or shoes become wet, simply pat dry with a clean, soft cloth and let dry naturally. Then the item must be conditioned. Never use a heating device to dry exotic skins. When conditioning or cleaning exotic skin handbags, shoes or any other item of clothing, it is most important to use a soft cotton cloth to do so, never a paper towel or a cloth made of harsh fabric.

 OSTRICH LEATHER

There are hundreds of thousands of leather products available on the open market these days, but Ostrich leather products are increasingly considered to be among the highest-status, highly desired items. While it is viewed by many as an exotic leather, ostrich leather is increasingly popular in the fashion world and brings quality and beauty to the items made from it.

The most distinctive and well known aspect of Ostrich leather is its unique Quill pattern. These quills are the telltale indicators of where the feathers were - and are an indicator of the quality - and therefore the value - of an Ostrich leather product. There are Half Quill and Full Quill variations, with the quality determined from the density of the pattern of the leather. Regardless of whether your item is full or half quill, the methods for caring for Ostrich leather won't change.

To Care:

While caring for Ostrich leather is not difficult or complicated, there are some things to consider that you might not need to think about with other products. For instance, Ostrich leather can react to the oils of your skin, and unlike your leather jacket, you are likely to be handling it far more often - holding the handle or strap of an Ostrich leather bag for instance. So for items such as handbags or briefcases, there may be a different type of leather used for the handle, or it may include a cover for this area. Even if no care is taken in this area, this can be considered to be natural wear and tear over time, as you would expect with any leather items.

To Store:

If you do not plan to use your ostrich leather item for an extended amount of time it is recommended to store it in a soft cloth bag or wrapped in tissue paper.  Many ostrich leather products are packaged in a small bag when you received it. Hint: Keep that bag and use it as a storage bag when necessary.

To Clean:

Most leather products are easy to maintain and clean and just like most other leather products, when it comes to caring for Ostrich leather you should ensure that you are not using any chemicals or abrasive products that might come in contact with the leather. When you feel it is necessary to clean your ostrich leather product, using a dry, soft cloth is recommended.  If your ostrich leather product gets any liquid spilled on it, you must dab the leather with a soft dry cloth to soak up as much of the spilled liquid as quickly as possible.   Leather as a general characteristic is very porous and will soak up any liquids that spill on it so timing in removing any spillage is important.

Most accidental spillages or marks, such as oils, inks, or other types of liquids should be removed with a slightly dampened cloth as soon as possible. But it should be considered that products with oil contained in them can cause permanent damage to the surface, and should be removed by adding a thin layer of talc over the affected area. This should soak up the oily substance and can be wiped away easily to leave a clean surface. At no time should household cleaning items be used to attempt to remove stains or marks as these are likely to only cause damage.

If you spill ink based items on your ostrich leather product can be a tough prospect.  Ink, in its nature, is a dye.  Leather, being a naturally porous material, will soak up any ink very quickly.  The longer ink remains on the surface of the leather the deeper it will penetrate into and color the leather.  If the ink has soaked into the leather strong products would be required to remove it and this would damage the underlying leather and would necessitate replacement of your ostrich leather item.  This Leather Ink Remover product is recommended for cleaning ink from leather products but it is not a sure thing.

Some items made from Ostrich leather are more exposed to the harshness of the environment than others. For example, a pair of ostrich leather boots will need cleaning more regularly and more thorough care than a wallet or mobile phone case. For heavy use items made from ostrich leather, only approved and tested cleaning products should be used.

When cleaning ostrich leather products, first, brush away any dust or dirt from the leather surface, paying close attention to detail areas where dust and grime can collect. A cotton bud can be used to get into these small areas and remove any dust before any cleaning products are applied.  Once this is done, apply a thin layer of ostrich leather conditioner, leather shampoo or shoe crème to the surface of the leather and allow it to dry completely.  Once the conditioner or crème has dried you can then buff the leather with a soft dry cloth in a circular motion.  Never use detergents or chemicals to clean ostrich leather products as this can result in permanent damage to the surfaces of the leather.  Testing of any cleaning products, crèmes or conditioners should be completed on a small test area that is out of view, to ensure that it doesn't adversely affect the quality of the product before use.

When cleaning, it is important to ensure that any bumps, ridges and creases are cleared of the cleaning agent. Leaving any cleaning products in contact with your leather item can cause visible staining over time.  Once you have cleaned your leather product you can use a leather sealer or leather protection product to protect it against dirt and damage.

When caring for Ostrich leather items which are not in use it is essential that they be stored in a clean, dry and dark place. Exposure to sunlight for extended periods of time can cause discoloration and fading, just as would be the case with any other leather products. Even artificial light can affect the color of the product, so ensuring that your item is stored away safely will assist in keeping it looking brand new.

Caring for Ostrich leather products is simple, and following the steps of care suggested above will help to give you many years of use and enjoyment out of that luxury ostrich leather item that you own.

SEA SNAKE

As soon as you get your gorgeous new snake skin products, make sure that you treat them with a waterproofing spray. Snake skin is a surprisingly hard-wearing material, but does require its own special care regime.

To Clean:

Clean your snake skin product with a warm, clean, damp white cloth and very gently wipe against the grain of the snake skin. You’re aiming to remove small clods of dirt and debris that might have gotten caught in the scales. The skin shouldn’t be wet, but it may be a little damp after this process. Leave to dry but not in direct sunlight.

Once the product is dry, it is time to condition it. Like most leathers, snake skin needs to be conditioned from time-to-time so that it doesn’t become dry and brittle. Go to your local store or cobbler and ask about a leather conditioner that is appropriate for snake skin. Patch test the product first, by gently rubbing it on a cloth first then apply onto the product. If it has no adverse effect on the material, go ahead and rub the conditioner onto the rest of the product. Be careful to wipe in the same direction as the grain of the snakeskin.

To Store:

In terms of storage, be sure to store your shoes in a cool, dry place out of the direct sunlight.
